Lebanon Odyssey Fieldschool provided me all the knowledge needed to increase my potency and expertise in that field. During 4 weeks, divided into field work and Laboratory exploitation I was able at the end of this training to gain all the necessary information to follow the human identification path of Excavation, Analysis and finally interpretation. In the Odyssey Fieldschool, our mentors Dr. Xenia-Paula Kyriakou and Dr.Elzbieta Jaskulska shared with us their years of experience and knowledge. Their appreciated efforts increased our love to this broad field by seeing some passion in their eyes. Moreover, this training introduced us and helped us to gain new friendship which helped us to not only study but at the same time to enjoy our times. For those who wish to be part of our team don’t hesitate, register now and enjoy an amazing experience in the beautiful coastal city of Limassol where you study, learn and discover Cyprus all along with its touristic and nightlife. |

United States Odyssey was a defining moment of my undergraduate. It was amazing-- I attended both the certificate program and the field school. I didn't have any previous experience with anatomy or osteology, but the lectures and then the practical application with Dr. Jaskulska provided a great foundation. The actual excavation was also highly educational and fully hands on. I managed to meet students from around the world, some of whom I'm still very close with. The program was also an opportunity to see and experience Cyprus and the local culture, with day trips to different cities and archaeology sites. I highly recommend this program to anyone interested for an introduction to forensic anthropology and excavation methods. |

Hong Kong Odyssey fieldschool was really a precious experience for me. With its extensive skeleton collection house in the ossuary, we got to learn about various cases of pathologies, and traumas hands on! Also, the collection is really excellent for doing osteological related research. I was so fortunate to be put in such a friendly learning environment with people from different walks of life and different countries, yet shared one intention. I am extremely grateful for both mentor and supervisor, Dr Elzbieta Jaskulska and Director Xenia-Paula Kyriakou for their generosity on sharing their experiences with all of us. I attended the field school two years in a roll as a student, and am returning for the third as a student supervisor in the coming summer. I cannot wait to the 2017 season already! |

Summer 2017 has been the best summer of my life and that is all thanks to Odyssey fieldschool. The Human Remains Training Certificate provided me with exceptional in depth knowledge which was fantastic as I had no previous human osteology experience.
The following four weeks during the Forensic Anthropology & Archaeological Excavation Fieldschool, involved working on an excavation, due to my previous experience I was able to work on a commingled grave. This was a fantastic opportunity and intriguing, as the remains underneath the soil were unknown. The fascination came as soon as one bone/fragment was uncovered there were usually many more appeared around it through brushing gently in that area. Then came the fun task (haha) of drawing the finds before the lifting and documentation process.
Not only was the work interesting and important, the trips were an essential part of learning more about Cypriot culture (from various archaeological sites/museums, watching a traditional Greek play in an amphitheatre, trying local food, boat trips for snorkelling and scuba diving…the list goes on). Another great thing about this fieldschool were my colleagues who I got to share this incredible experience with, all of us from different walks of life (some of whom are now lifelong friends) but in Cyprus to share the same experience. Once your body gets used to the heat (or tries too) there is no downside.
I am so humbled to be given the opportunity to return next summer 2018 to do research as one of Odyssey Fieldschool's intern (junior) researchers.

Australia The Teeth “Guru” I hate the dentist! So much so that I did not set foot in a dentist’s office or surgery for over 15 years! And the only thing that got me to the dentist after all that time was the required check up prior to being granted a residency visa for the United Arab Emirates. I am happy to report that my teeth are (thankfully) still in great shape – even with all my dentist avoidance. BUT I still hate the dentist. So you will appreciate the irony of me now being not-so-gently encouraged by Xenia to focus on, and perhaps even specialise in teeth! I have to admit that despite my initial skepticism I have now come around to the idea. This is in no small part due to Xenia’s very convincing sales pitch singing the multiple praises of teeth including: |
|
- They are durable,
- They have a large presence in the archaeological record. With me being interested in bioarchaeological applications of osteology this is a good thing!;
- For something so small a LOT of information can be derived from them – potentially age at death, sex of the individual, health status of the individual , DNA analysis, and even the ability to map a person’s life movement through isotopic analysis. They are punching well above their weight in terms of data that can be gleaned; and
- When working with teeth you get to do metrics! (Yes. I love taking measurements.)
As you can see, teeth are AMAZING!
So, after Xenia’s initially suggestion I am fully on board with the study of teeth. I am now involved in a mini—project using the teeth in the collection here at the Odyssey Field school Internship. This is
so exciting! Standby for project updates.
